There are a variety of technologies to purify, disinfect and optimise water. Watertec Engineering offer several treatment technologies with the emphasis on environmental friendly solutions, and one of the most effective and sustainable is ozone.Ozone was first used in water treatment in the late 1800s and has greater effectiveness against bacteria and viruses compared to chlorination. In addition, the oxidizing properties can also reduce the concentration of iron, manganese, sulphur and reduce or eliminate taste and odour problems.
Not only is ozone more effective at deactivating viruses and bacteria than any other disinfection treatment, it also requires very little contact time and thereby reduces the overall treatment residence time while simultaneously leaving no chemical residues.
Ozone Water treatment is a very efficient, safe and eco-friendly option for treating and disinfecting water. The reason ozone is so efficient is that it is a product that only requires oxygen and an electrical discharge to create ozone. There is no waste or by products, is a renewable resource and when used in water ozone molecules will split back to oxygen molecules. Due to how efficient ozone is it becomes a safer option for sites regarding WHS, there are no more potential hazardous chemicals to worry about regarding transport, handling, storage, and the chance of injury. Ozone has a wide range of uses and is most well-known for disinfection of bacteria. Apart from being used as an ozone disinfectant to sterilise water, it can also be used for virus inactivation, spore, amoebic cysts, cryptosporidium, and giardia. When using for disinfection it has secondary benefits such as, prevention of THM, oxidation of inorganics, taste and odour control, micro flocculation and oxidizing synthetic and volatile organic chemicals. Ozone water treatment in Australia for wastewater is also becoming more popular due to a process called Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP). The ozone UV H2O2 treatment combines UV and H2O2 together to create a powerful and extremely oxidant hydroxyl free radicle chemical reaction that will kill all bacteria and render chemicals benign. This is exactly why the ozone reuse treatment is becoming a very attractive future application for real waste water treatment and also being considered a great technology for slip stream ozone systems of swimming pools. AOP refers to increasing the reactivity of ozone in water. This is performed by forcing ozone to react via a free radical pathway. There are two methods commonly used to attain AOP:
- Hydrogen Peroxide (O3 + H202)
- Ultraviolet Radiation (O3 + UV)
Many molecules that are resistant to ozone alone are degraded by this free radical process. AOP utilized on organics that normally react to ozone will reduce the initial ozone dosage required by approximately 20%. AOP is used most often to control organics (taste, odour, colour, THM precursors, micro pollutants and pesticides). This is not to say that AOP is required for oxidation of organics, but in some instances it may be preferred as an ozone advanced oxidation method. AOP is also used for trihalomethanes (THM) precursors (humic and fulvic acids) which are formed until they are chlorinated. Therefore, it is best to control the THM precursors prior to chlorination (if required after ozonation) by partially oxidizing them with small amounts of ozone. Normally, the ozonated water is then passed through sand and/or GAC filtration. The partially oxidized THM precursors are biologically degraded in the sand and/or GAC filters.
Main benefits of using ozone in water treatment
- Ozone is highly effective over a wide pH range, rapidly reacts with bacteria and viruses, and has stronger germicidal properties than chlorination.
- With ozone, we can eliminate a wide variety of inorganic, organic and microbiological problems, as well as taste and odour issues.
- The treatment process does not add chemicals to the water meaning less chemical residue for your plant, end consumer and the environment.
There are essentially no harmful residuals from ozone use, as ozone undergoes a natural decomposition in water. Ozone treatment also prevents re-growth of micro-organisms, provided the other processes in the disinfection process have been successful in reducing particulates in the wastewater stream. Ozone is also produced on site and does not require shipping or handling, thus removing complications like safety and environmental issues associated with chemical handling.
